Ensure water for paddy crop, says Chandy

PALAKKAD: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has urged the State government to ensure irrigation water for the second crop of paddy being cultivated in the Chittur area by taking up immediate reconstruction of the breached portions of the right bank canal of the Moolathara dam.

After a visit to the dam on Friday, Mr. Chandy said the government had failed to provide infrastructure, transport, accommodation and communication facilities to the officials working in the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) system. If they had been provided all modern facilities, it would have been easy to take steps to prevent damage to the Moolathara dam and the destruction that followed.

Mr. Chandy also demanded that the government pay compensation to the family of the person who died in the flood in the Bharathapuzha following the breach of the dam. On the return of K. Muraleedharan to the Congress, Mr. Chandy said no talks were being held in New Delhi in this regard. The decision on Mr. Muraleedharan’s application would be taken by the party high command.
