DINDIGUL: A dam across Vanji river along Mallanampatti in Nilakottai block, which was damaged in flash floods in 2005 and 2007, would be rehabilitated soon to improve groundwater table of grey areas of the taluk and to restore cultivation in 76.6 acres under its ayacut, said Revenue Minister I. Periasamy. Inspecting the damaged dam at Nilakottai near here on Friday, he said that priority would be given for sanctioning funds for reconstruction of the dam. The dam was completely damaged and silt accumulated in the 1,073-metre-long supply channel that carried water to Kannimar Samudram irrigation tank. On completion of this project, food production would be 68.82 tonnes, resulting in improved economic and living conditions in this area. Vanji river was a tributary of Marudhanadi. Maximum inflow to the river was 132.20 cusecs. Collector M Vallalar and other officials accompanied him.
