Agriculture Department begins training for ‘Adarsha Rythulu’

NALGONDA: To ensure effective participation of farmers in watershed management programmes in the district, the Agriculture Department has sent about 40 farmers of the district to Ralegan Siddhi in Maharastra on a four-day visit.

The farmers from the watershed villages of the district, accompanied by the officials concerned, left for Ralegan Siddhi on Thursday to study the implementation of participatory watershed management programmes in that village, which attained a role-model status due to the sustained efforts of social activist Anna Hazare.

The watershed development activities are being implemented in about 500 hectares spread in eight villages in Nalgonda, Devarakonda, Kanagal and few others mandals under the National Watershed Development Project for Rain-fed Areas (NWDPRA).

Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department has embarked on a training programme for the ‘Adarsha Rythulu’ (model farmers) to make optimum use of their services in motivating the farmers to adopt scientific methods, including watershed management practices.

Benefit for farmers

Speaking to The Hindu, Joint Director of Agriculture Syed Jalaluddin Hussain said the farmers were sent to Ralegan Siddhi to get exposure to the best participatory watershed management practices. The tour would help them gain first hand information on sustainable management of natural resources to increase groundwater recharge and achieve high crop yield, he said. Training camps are being conducted for the ‘Adarsha Rythulu’ in a phased manner at select places all over the district to enable them discharge their designated tasks effectively and guide the farmers to reap rich harvest, he said.
