Birth control project for dogs launched

Blue Cross aims at making Karimnagar a rabies-free city

KARIMNAGAR: Founder of Blue Cross and member of Animal welfare board of India Amala Akkineni on Friday formally launched the animal birth control (ABC) project sterilization of stray dogs to make Karimnagar a rabies-free city.

Ms. Amala visited the veterinary polyclinic in the town and explained to the veterinary officials the importance of sterilization of stray dogs to avoid the spread of rabies through power point presentation.

She also inaugurated the operation theatre and inspected the premises and participated in the plantation programme on the campus.

She called upon the people to play a responsible role to transform Karimnagar town as rabies free on par with Chennai and Jaipur cities. She explained how stray dogs could be captured by using nets and sterilized, especially female dogs.

Balancing ecology

MLC Naradasu Laxman Rao called upon the Blue Cross founder to launch a crusade against the people abusing the animals and insulting them.

He said that the animals were playing their responsible role for the balance of ecology, but the human beings were destroying the nature and causing pollution.

ABC monitoring committee convener G. Komuraiah Arya explained the implementation of the programme and sterilization of around 4,000 stray dogs in the town within a span of two years at a cost of Rs. 18 lakh. Joint Director (Animal Husbandry), Suresh Kumar, former Joint Director (Animal Husbandry) Laxmirajam, local corporator V. Ramana Rao and others were present.
