DCC chief alleges political motive

Staff Reporter

Merger of panchayats with Corporation

Kozhikode: District Congress Committee president K.C. Abu said here on Friday that the merger of Elathur, Cheruvannur-Nallalam and Beypore panchayats with Kozhikode Corporation was a political move of the CPI(M) to preserve its unbroken 35-year rule in the corporation.

He said the CPI(M) was sure to be defeated in the elections next year and by adding these three panchayats, in which the party had a commanding majority, it was trying to alter the demography of the constitution.

He said the merger of these three panchayats was a major loss to the people residing in these areas as all Centrally sponsored schemes like the NREGS and other rural projects would be lost.

Mr. Abu said these panchayats were functioning well and had reported 95 per cent fund utilisation while the Corporation cut a sorry figure with 50-60 per cent.

“After merger, the people residing here will have to pay higher taxes. Instead of decentralisation, we are seeing the reverse process happening here,” Mr. Abu said.

Mr. Abu hit out at the CPI(M) for trying to seize the Comtrust land and build a five-star hotel. He said the DCC would organise dharnas at eight places to highlight corruption in the corporation. On December 14, Congressmen will converge on the Mananchira Square to protest against the decision to construct rain shelters there. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will lead the protest.
