IIM-K students remember a hero

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: Students at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K) in association with the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) organised a candlelight vigil in memory of Manjunath Shanmugam, an IIM - Lucknow alumnus who was murdered for fighting corruption.

Manjunath Shanmugam, when he was serving Indian Oil Corporation, was engaged in ending malpractices in his territory. He was murdered on November 19, 2005, by a petrol pump owner and his accomplices.

The students took an oath of honesty, integrity and commitment to ethical behaviour as responsible citizens at a function held on Thursday on the IIMK campus.

Director of the IIMK Dr. Debashis Chatterjee, who was professor at IIM Lucknow and taught Manjunath, shared some of his memories of Manjunath. The address was followed by a minute’s silence in commemoration of Manjunath.

The vigil is a unique opportunity for the student community to stir consciousness and raise their voice against corruption, Charanyan Iyengar, a spokesman for IIMK students said. The remembrance programme is organised by the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust formed by members of the international IIM alumni network. The MST’s immediate objective is to ensure quick justice in the Manjunath murder case.
