CROWD-PULLER: Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy mobbed by supporters during his campaign in Hyderabad on Friday.

HYDERABAD: Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, in his first ever tour in the city, invoked Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s name and his welfare schemes to energise Congress party’s campaign for GHMC polls here on Friday. Sonia Gandhi’s leadership was praised, but Chief Minister K. Rosaiah found no mention in his speeches.

Dressed in cotton slacks, white khadi shirt and waving his hand like his father, Mr. Jagan began on an emotional note stating he never dreamt of a scenario without his beloved father. “He might be no more but his ideals are alive for us to fulfil them,” he said. Without wasting much time, he took on Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu.

“YSR used to say that a leader has to be credible who lives by his word, come what may. Did Mr. Naidu ever speak the truth?” he asked. From increasing price of two rupees a kilo rice to prohibition, Mr. Naidu went back on his word on every issue. “He is no match to YSR and voting for TDP means supporting politics of deception,” he said.

He accused the TDP chief of even deceiving the Telangana Rastra Samiti (TRS) just five months after tying up for general elections. He spoke at length on development works taken up here. “YSR issued the order of forming GHMC after Mr. Naidu backtracked. Schemes worth Rs. 43,000 crore have been grounded in the last two years. Mr. Naidu built the Hi-Tec city but forgot about sewerage. About 78,000 houses are being constructed for the poor whereas only 400-500 houses were built during his rule,” he said.

All the 3.5 lakh identified under Indiramma housing will get houses under the Congress rule; more than seven lakh got ration cards. “By voting for Congress candidates, you will only be paying your tributes to YSR,” he said. “God willing, the day will come for sure,” he remarked when supporters started chanting ‘Jagan for CM’.

Huge caravan

Home Ministers Sabitha Indra Reddy, IT Minister K. Venkat Reddy, Health Minister Danam Nagender and others were with him. A huge caravan of supporters and party activists followed his vehicle.
