Indrajeet Patel sets 5000m mark

WARANGAL: “Athletics is the cheapest sport,” said Indrajeet Patel of Uttar Pradesh. “There’s hardly any equipment to buy,” he explained after a display that was certainly not commonplace.

“Yet, I’m always short of money, since there’s little or nothing of it in this discipline,” lamented the farmer’s son from village Tilikapura Soram, near Allahabad.

Setting a scorching pace, he re-wrote compatriot Mukesh Kumar’s 5000 metres boys’ under-18 National record of 14:55.20 seconds, clocking 14:53.69seconds in the Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy memorial junior National athletics championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday.

Late on Thursday evening, the J.S. Bhatia-trained runner also clinched the 1500 metre gold, timing 4:07.30 minutes.

The results: Boys: U-20: 10 km walk: 1. Mani Ram 46:07.80 (MP); 1500 m: C.K. Ranjit 4:06.52; discus: Akash Antil 53.38m (Har); shot put: Naresh 19.13m (Har); 400m hurdles: Akhil Francis 51.94s. (AP) NMR (Shejil Verghese, 52.51s).

200 m: Parveen Kumar 21.86s (Har); 4 x 400 m: Kerala ‘A’ (Sajin V., Rahul G. Pillai, Rahul K.C., Vikas Chandran) 3:20.27; 3000 m steeplechase: Sunil Kumar 9:29.12 (Mah); Triple jump: J. Surendar 15.23m (TN); 400 m: Gurpreet Singh 49.19s (Pun).

U-18: 10 km walk: Deepak Kumar 46:08.10. (Guj); 5000 m: Indrajeet Patel 14:53.69 (UP), NR (Mukesh Kumar, 14:55.20).

Pole vault: Parvinder Patel 4.00m (UP); javelin: Sunil Kumar Yadav 65.46m (UP); 400 m hurdles: Ajay Kumar Mishra 54.51 secs. (Guj); 1500 m: Indrajeet Patel 4:07.30; 200 m: S.
