“Ask Maoists not to disrupt elections in Jharkhand”

Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI: The Union government on Friday urged civil society organisations to ask Left-wing extremists not to disrupt the Assembly elections in Jharkhand.

While expressing confidence that the State people would face the challenge of the CPI (Maoist) resolutely and turn out in large numbers to vote, the Home Ministry said the civil society organisations should also play their part and condemn wanton acts of violence. “They should ask the CPI(Maoist) not to disrupt the elections, which constitute the foundation of a democracy,” the Ministry said.

Condemning Thursday’s train derailment in the State by suspected Maoists in which one person was killed and 40 injured, the Ministry said, “the CPI(Maoist) seem determined to carry out the threat to disrupt the elections and continue to kill innocent people.”

It asked the electorate of the State to exercise their right to vote confidently in the elections that begin on November 25.

“Nothing can be more destructive of democracy and the rule of law than attempts by a banned organisation to disrupt elections through premeditated acts of violence,” it said.
