Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee – National Integration Forum, President Raja Thangavelu has appealed to the Chief Minister to take expeditious steps for streamlining the power supply situation. In a memorandum, Mr.Raja Thangavelu said that the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) conference chaired by the Chief Minister should create records and bring good to the agriculture. Essential need for agriculture is electricity whereas the power supply is erratic and owing to lack of power supply for 12 hours, farming community has suffered serious setbacks. As a result, the yield has come down and has resulted in the rise in prices of essential commodities. The present planning is not adequate for generating power for even the present day requirement. Power generation should be planned with a foresight taking into account the future requirements. The memorandum also pointed out that during the rule of Late Chief Minister Kamarajar, the Parambikulam – Aliyar Project was designed with three stages of power generation catering to the demands of today. Today, wind mills are becoming handy for generating some quantum of required power. However, major industries and small industries that are largely located in Coimbatore and other industrial houses and textile mills are facing the brunt of power shortage. The situation has led to job loss, closure of industries. In Coimbatore City alone more than 1,500 foundries and close to 100 textile mills remain closed resulting in lack of employment for thousands of workers. Non-Conventional and Renewable Sources of Energy Ministry of the Centre was earmarking several thousands of crores for power generation, however these projects had to be pursued and implemented facing a lot of hurdles and difficulties. The duration of power cut has been on the rise and people are left with no other option but to wait endlessly for when the power supply would go off and when it would resume. Hence, Mr.Raja Thangavelu appealed to the Government to take expeditious steps on a war footing to increase the generation capacity to meet the growing demand.
