KOTTAYAM: The Dalit Democratic Front (DDF) will observe December 10, World Human Rights Day, as Human Rights Declaration Day of the Oppressed. DDF convener P.O. John said here on Thursday that the Front would launch a wider agitation against the oppression unleashed against the Dalits following the incidents at Varkala, where a pedestrian was hacked to death allegedly by the members of a Dalit organisation. He said that they were in touch with like-minded organisations outside the State and were expecting representatives from organisations across the State at the December 10 public meeting to be organised in connection with the Human Rights Declaration Day of the Oppressed at Kollam. Criticising the actions of the SC/ST Monitoring Cell under the Police Department, Mr. John said that this was part of an attempt to divide the Dalit community and use the Dalit against the Dalit. ‘Plans to divide’The DDF leader alleged that the State government and ruling class were devising strategies of oppression against the Dalit community under the cover of the Varkala incident. He hoped that all democratic-minded people would join hands in the fight against oppression.
