Some 22,400 visit the zoo on November 15 Officials hope the revenue may touch Rs. 60 lakhs this year
Hot Destination: Visitors enjoying a train ride amidst greenery at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. VISAKHAPATNAM: Its clean and peaceful ambience and a wide variety of wildlife enveloped in seamless stretches of green-caped hills are the some of the main reasons that drew a record number of visitors to the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park during the picnic season of ‘Karthikamasam’ this year. According to the official figures of the Vizag zoo, the last Sunday of the season, i.e. November 15, recorded the highest number of visitors that the zoo ever received so far. Some 22,400 people visited the zoo on that day and the revenue generated was a record high of Rs.3.04 lakhs on the day. “These are the highest figures the Vizag zoo has ever recorded on a single day,” zoo curator Rahul Pandey told The Hindu. While last year the revenue generated during ‘Karthikamasam’ touched Rs.13.4 lakhs with a total of 90,000 visitors recorded during ‘Karthikamasam’, this year the figures have touched new heights. During the picnic season this year, the zoo received one lakh five thousand visitors and generated a total revenue of Rs.15.4 lakhs. Overall, the zoo recorded Rs. 53.5 lakhs revenue till November this year, as against last year’s figure of Rs.51.5 lakhs during the same period. “Going by the overwhelming response we got in the picnic season, we hope to touch Rs.60 lakhs revenue this year,” Mr. Pandey said. New attractions soonApart from this, the zoo is gearing up to receive a male hippo from the Hyderabad zoo shortly. “We are waiting for the crowd to thin down, so that it is easier for us to manage the transfer of the new animal,” he added. The panther cubs will also be put on display by the end of January.
