Corruption in ‘Indiramma’ unearthed

Staff Reporter

According to an estimate nearly Rs. 60 crore misappropriated in Medak district

SANGAREDDY: A Church father constructed a single house in the place of two houses sanctioned for beneficiaries and an amount of Rs. 30,000 was released for the purpose. In 15 cases, payment of Rs 1.4 lakh was made but no houses were constructed. Middlemen pocketed Rs. 2.94 lakh in the name of 127 members of whom 30 are ineligible.

These were some of the irregularities in Indiramma housing in Buchinelli village that came to the notice of the district administration.

Of the Rs. 32.85 lakh sanctioned to the village an amount was Rs 7.7 lakh was misused which stands for about 23 per cent of the total amount. Across the district the corruption in Indiramma housing varies from 25 per cent to 50 per cent.

A senior official of Housing Department said that the irregularities took place under the nose of the public representatives and many of them were aware about the irregularities. The irregularities came to the notices of officials after they issued Indiramma pass books to the beneficiaries furnishing the details of cash and cement supplied to them as per record.

On the other hand, out of the 278 houses sanctioned to the village in July 2007, only 25 houses were completed and the remaining are in different stages of construction. They were to be completed by December 2007. “We suspect that out of Rs.300 crore sanctioned to Medak district under different phases of Indiramma, about Rs. 60 crore might have been misused. The details are yet to be worked out,” said a senior official.
