Congress seeks White Paper on relief work

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Congress on Friday demanded that the State Government bring out a White Paper on relief and rehabilitation works undertaken in flood-affected areas of north Karnataka.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council V.S. Ugrappa demanded that the government provide all information on collection of funds, release of funds and works taken up.

Governor H.R. Bhardwaj expressed his disappointment over the pace of flood relief work. The Karnataka Lokayukta had also criticised the relief work.

Though the Centre had released Rs. 1,459 crore under various schemes, including Calamity Relief Fund, for relief and rehabilitation of the people, the State Government has not utilised the funds, he alleged. The State had released just Rs. 44.42 crore for the relief work, he claimed.

Under Article 163 of the Constitution, the Chief Minister and the Cabinet had to brief the Governor on rehabilitation works undertaken by the Government. But the Governor had not been provided any information on the matter, he said.
