Number of crimes on the decline in Dharmapuri district: IG

HARUR (DHARMAPURI): The number of crimes has come down considerably in Dharmapuri district during the year 2009 compared to the previous year, said Pramod Kumar, Inspector General of Police (Western Region), here recently.

He told reporters that 181 cases were registered in the district during the current year as against 259 cases during 2008. Likewise, the number of murder cases had also come down to 30 from 39 last year.

He said as many as 314 Village Vigilance Committees were formed in the district with 4,061 members. Members of these committees were assisting the police force during night patrolling, traffic control and other local issues in their villages.

As per the norms of the police department, 440 constables were appointed for 1,431 villages in Dharmapuri district.

As a result of the appeal made by the district police, tribal people handed over 249 country-made guns at the nearest police stations voluntarily.

Besides, 3 lakh fake currency notes were recovered from three persons during the year. The fake notes were displayed during the press briefing.

It had been decided to conduct medical check-up for policemen at all the police stations once in a month, Mr. Pramod Kumar said.

He added that the construction of new building for the A. Pallipatti police station at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh and the police quarters in Pennagaram, A. Pallippatti and Harur at Rs. 17 crore was at its final stages.

Lands for the construction of new buildings for Pappireddypatti, Indoor and Madhikonpalayam police stations had been identified. A model police checkpost would soon come up near Karimangalam, Mr. Pramod Kumar added.
