CPI (M) flays government

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticised the Congress government in the Union Territory for declaring section 144 of Cr. P. C to enable the civic authorities to dump garbage at Karuvadikuppam yard.

Addressing a joint press conference here on Friday, Tamil Nadu State Committee member T. Murugan and secretary of Puducherry unit V. Perumal said people have every right to protest to highlight their grievance.

The people of Karuvadikuppam have been agitating for a long time seeking shifting of the garbage yard, Mr. Perumal said.

The party also took exception to the curbs imposed on the functioning of night eateries.

Mr. Murugan said the government had given permission to operate the night eateries till 2 a.m.

However, police are threatening the owners to close the shops by midnight, he said.
