SHIMOGA: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Hartalu Halappa appealed to farmers here on Friday to sell maize grown by them only at the purchase centres set up at the Agriculture Marketing Produce Committee (APMC) yards under the Government’s support price scheme. Speaking after inaugurating a maize purchase centre set up at the APMC Yard for 2009-10 here, he said that the Government had announced a support price for maize at Rs. 840 per quintal and action had been taken to purchase maize in a legal way. Mr. Halappa said that maize purchase centres had been set up in the district in this financial year at Shikaripur (two), Shiralkoppa, Sagar, Anandapuram, Sorab, Anavatti, Shimoga and Machenahalli (one each) in Bhadravati taluk. He said that in 2008, seven lakh tonnes of maize had been purchased under the support price scheme in the State. He said that maize farmers had been paid Rs. 609 crore. Mr. Halappa said that 18 lakh tonnes of maize were purchased in Shimoga district last year and Rs. 161 crore was paid to farmers. Minister for Energy K.S. Eshwarappa, Shimoga Rural MLA K.G. Kumaraswamy, Shimoga Zilla Panchayat president H.C. Basavarajappa, Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey, Shimoga Urban Development Authority president Jnaneshwar, APMC president Ayanur Shivanandappa and Shimoga Development Cooperative Central Bank president R.M. Manjunath Gowda were present.
