Computerised documents system inaugurated Technology has been developed by NIC Karwar: The Regional Transport Office of Karwar on Thursday introduced the smart card system for Certificate of Registration (RC) books and driving licences. Deputy Commissioner Channappa Gowda and Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta inaugurated computerised documents and smart card here. Narendra Holkar, Deputy Commissioner, Transport Department, said that the department would store details of vehicles and drivers in a 16 kb chip and it cannot be copied or forged. He said that it is a technology developed by National Informatics Centre and can be used for multiple purposes. He said a mobile system would be introduced to issue smart cards to people in Joida and Ankola taluks. Mr. Raman Gupta said that the new system would help improve coordination among the police and the transport authorities. It will aid in detecting vehicles and offenders in case of a crime. Mr. Channappa Gowda said that after Delhi, Karnataka is the second State to issue smart cards. The system would help the police and the transport officials to get information of the driver and the vehicle in case of accidents and thefts. He hoped that the system would help check the accidents involving iron ore lorries in the district. Later, speaking to presspersons, Mr. Holkar said a joint squad of the police and the transport authorities should be formed to check iron ore lorries in the district. H.J. Tambad, RTO Karwar, was present.
