Corpn. cracks the whip on encroachments in city

Coimbatore: The demolition squad of the Coimbatore Corporation on Friday cracked the whip on a commercial complex on Cross Cut Road in the city for having encroached upon the parking space by stocking its goods.

Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra formed a demolition squad, equipping it with Assistant Town Planning Officers, earth movers and vehicles.

The team members were given a mandate to crackdown on the unauthorised constructions, deviations and violations from plan in the urban area. The civic body had decided to display zero tolerance towards encroachments, unauthorised constructions and those with violations/ deviations from the approved plan.

In the last couple of days there had been a series of demolition drives in order to see that the rules were followed and that suitable action was taken against violations.

The objective was to ensure that a culture of compliance sets in, said Mr.Anshul.

The demolition had been focusing on major buildings that are either unauthorised or those in which there are a lot of violations and deviations. The authorities had identified ten such buildings, notices were served and warnings were issued complying with the procedural formalities before cracking the whip.

The squad on Thursday laid hands on the complex dealing with automobile spare parts for encroaching upon the parking space and turning it into a stock yard.

The measurements were taken which proved that what was shown as parking space had been turned into a stockyard, thus forcing the customers to park their vehicles on the road.

In such cases, the civic body was not resorting to demolitions. Property owners are being given time to restore the original purpose of the space.

The drive would continue, Mr. Mishra said.
