KOTTAYAM: The seven part special lecture series by K.R. Singh, international relations expert and professor at the K.P.S. Menon Chair at the School of International Relations and Politics, Mahatma Gandhi University, concluded here with an analysis of the roots of contemporary Islamic radicalism. Speaking on the subject Mr. Singh said that the pattern of resurgent Islam that had begun in the mid 19th century continued today but much more virulently. The roots of Islamic radicalism need to be searched in the Islamic resurgences since the mid 19th century. According to Mr. Singh, radical Islam got a boost since Iranian Revolution and Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. The Afghan crisis evoked a different set of responses as the resistance was based on Islamic Jihad. The concept of Jihad was fostered by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the USA for their own respective reasons. According to Mr. Singh, India has been unwillingly sucked into the neo-cold war or the war on terror. The question was whether the country has a coherent policy to respond to these challenges.
