KOCHI: The modern lifestyle and food habits are giving rise to a number of ophthalmic problems. Diabetes related blindness (retinopathy), night-blindness and problems of sight in children have increased enormously. With a focus on treatment of such ailments, the Department of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) is organising a two-day national seminar Netra 2009 starting on Friday. A pre-seminar workshop was held at the Government Ayurveda College, Thripunithura, and Sreedhareeyam Eye Hospital, Koothattukulam, on Thursday in which delegates attending the seminar and students from various Ayurveda colleges were given a live demonstration of the various treatment modalities followed with respect to ophthalmic problems. Scientific sessions of the seminar would be held at the Gokulam Convention Centre. Ayurveda experts from various States would present papers on various topics. About 500 delegates from various Ayurveda colleges that include professors, medical officers, students and private practitioners would be attending the seminar. About 20 papers would be presented on diabetes-related problems, night-blindness and paediatric problems of eyes. P.K. Sreemathi, Minister for Health, would be inaugurating the seminar at 10 a.m.
