Israel to help Punjab

CHANDIGARH: Leading Israeli players in cutting edge solar energy technology, agriculture, water management and environmental and water pollution solutions are likely to visit Punjab as part of new joint development ventures proposed between Israel and Punjab.

Disclosing that the Government of India has been approached to facilitate the process, an official release here said that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had called on Israel’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Labour, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, to explore the possibility of joint collaboration between Israel and Punjab in several developmental areas.

Mr. Badal, now on an official visit to Israel, met captains of industry and experts to whom he emphasised the need for efficient and cost-effective treatment of water in Punjab for domestic as well as agriculture purposes. He sought information on technology for online monitoring of parameters before the discharge of treated water for irrigation and other purposes.

Mr. Badal evinced interest in the latest technology for treatment of effluents in industrial wastes and domestic sewage. One of the companies, Tahal, already active in several Indian states since 1994, offered to undertake a State-wide survey of the falling underground water table in a majority of blocks in Punjab. Companies whose representatives met the Chief Minister included CPY Solar Energy, Merkort-Israeli National Water Management Company, Tahal and AMIAD Israel. Mr. Badal also visited the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem where he and members of his contingent prayed for world peace.
