NEW DELHI: For the eighth consecutive year, Indian students have topped the rankings as the largest student body among foreign students studying in the United States. Also, the number of Indian students now in the U.S. has exceeded one lakh, according to the Institute of International Educations annual Open Doors report. Announcing the 2009 Open Doors numbers, U.S. Ambassador Timothy Roemer said, “The outstanding news of the record number of Indian students studying in the U.S. is a concrete evidence of the strength and depth of our connection. The growing numbers, growing each year, are a testament to the deep and robust relationship our two countries share and the bright future of cooperation the peoples of our great nations will see.” According to the report, the number of Indian students studying in the U.S. increased by 9 per cent in 2008-09, from 94,563 to 1,03,260. Of this, 15,600 are undergraduates, 71,019 graduates (including masters and Ph.D programmes), 1,755 non-degree and 14,886 internship participants. The numbers rose in all categories since the previous year but the biggest increase in absolute terms was in the number of internship participants. On the other hand, the number of U.S. students studying in India has increased by 20 per cent to 3,150 or less than 3 per cent of the number of Indian students studying in the U.S.
