AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi mingles with students at the Andhra Loyola College in Vijayawada on Wednesday.

VIJAYAWADA: Showering praise on the style of functioning of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, general secretary of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he was comfortable with his present position and he could do whatever he wanted in his current capacity.

“Nobody can predict who will become the Prime Minister of India in the future,” he said, when some students referred to him as the “future Prime Minister” during his 80-minute-long, free-wheeling interaction at the Andhra Loyola College here.

“Dr. Singh is a capable person and is doing his job well,” he remarked. During the interaction, Mr. Gandhi touched on a number of issues such as reservations, attacks on Indian students in Australia, terrorism and poverty.

On reservations, Mr. Gandhi asked those opposed to it to raise their hands. Even as a good number of hands went up, he said the need for reservations would not arise if there were a good number of institutions of higher education.

He observed that Indians in Australia were bold enough to face challenges.

On global warming, he said though the country was far ahead of the United States on this front, there was a lot to be done to protect the environment.

Asked about curbing terrorism, Mr. Gandhi said he had lost his father to terrorism and the accused were undergoing imprisonment. “We should not deprive anyone of his rights. We have a legal system that is, unfortunately, working slowly.”
