City doctor elected president of RSSDI

VISAKHAPATNAM: Noted endocrinologist G. R. Sridhar of the city was elected as president of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) during the 37th annual conference of the society held in Ahmedabad recently.

Dr. Sridhar is Director of Endocrine and Diabetes Centre here and founder-editor of the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. The RSSDI), which started with a few members 38 years ago, has grown into the premier organisation of endocrinologists, clinicians practicing diabetes with a membership of more than 5,000, said G.R. Sridhar, who was elected as its president recently.

The RSSDI was started by M.M.S. Ahuja at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi in 1972 as he wished to have an organisation to provide quality academic, research and training activities and it was Dr. P.V. Rao of Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, who helped its expansion, recalled Dr. Sridhar. Incidentally Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of life members, more than 650 in RSSDI. RSSDI’s annual conferences, the latest one was held in Ahmedabad in the first week of November, discusses important topics like diabetes, nutrition, etc. and holds continuous medical education programme. It is also funding research activities and so far Rs. 50 lakhs has been disbursed to the researchers.

It is also publishing the International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries for which articles are contributed from the Indian and foreign doctors and researchers. It is also running a certificate course on diabetes.

RSSDI has also brought out the ‘Textbook of Diabetes’, for which nearly 400 of its members have contributed through their research and study papers. The textbook is into its second edition.

Dr. Sridhar is concentrating on psychological aspects of diabetes, clinical informatics, computational biology and bioinformatics.

He is also founder chairman of the Indian chapter of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and Fellow of American Society of Endocrinologists.

He was also a former secretary of Endocrine Society of India. He has more than 200 scientific publications to his credit.

Dr. Sridhar is Adjunct Professor of Bioinformatics of Andhra University College of Engineering here. He is also guiding Ph.D. scholars in some subjects.
