THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The three United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders who won the byelections to the Kannur, Ernakulam and Alappuzha Assembly segments were sworn in at a function held at the Legislature Complex here on Wednesday.

A.P. Abdullakutty, Dominic Presentation and A.A. Shukoor took the oath at a solemn function held at the members’ lounge of the Assembly complex.

The swearing-in ceremony turned out to be an occasion for the UDF leaders to celebrate the victory.

Since the UDF high-power committee meeting was held here earlier in the day, almost all the senior leaders were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Prominent front leaders like Oommen Chandy, P.K. Kunhalikutty, M.I. Shanavas and K. Sudhakaran, MPs, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala, United Democratic Front convener P.P. Thankachan, Aryadan Mohammed, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Babu Prasad, K.C. Joseph, K.K. Shaju and C.F. Thomas, all MLAs, reached the hall to congratulate the newly-elected members.

None of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) leaders except Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Devaswom Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran and Surendran Pillai, MLA, attended the function. Other than Speaker K. Radhakrishnan, Mr. Achuthanandan and Mr. Chandy were also seated on the dais.

Legislature Secretary P.D. Rajan called the elected members to the stage and Mr. Radhakrishnan read out the oath. Mr. Abdullakutty was the first to be sworn in and it was followed by Mr. Presentation and Mr. Shukoor.

While Mr. Abdullakutty took the oath in the name of ‘Allah,’ others took the oath in the name of God.
