Tuticorin
Tuticorin: All measures would be taken to make Tuticorin a plastic-free district since the plastic wastes such as polythene bags and disposable tumblers dumped all over the town would cause environmental degradation, said Collector G. Prakash here on Tuesday. A committee headed by Mr. Prakash, Chairman and District Environmental Engineer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Convener, along with other officials comprising Corporation Commissioner, Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, Tiruchendur, Commissioner of Kovilpatti Municipality and Executive Officer of Tiruchendur Town Panchayat was constituted to oversee the proceedings in wiping out the menace by stressing the public to minimise the use of plastic. Earlier, the district administration convened a meeting and it was planned to organise awareness camps involving students to spread the message on the ill-effects of plastic use. Mr. Prakash instructed the officials concerned to segregate the plastic wastes from the corporation and municipalities and send them to India Cements in Tirunelveli for use in the cement kiln. He also sought cooperation from the people, voluntary organisations, Pollution Control Board, Department of Tourism and local bodies in eradicating the plastic menace.
