NEW DELHI: Athlete Batheri Tanwar and bodybuilder Raj Kishore Nayak were on Tuesday suspended for two years for anti-doping rule violations. The National Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel, headed by Mr. Dinesh Dayal, handed out the suspensions effective from August 20 this year when these cases were left pending because of further investigations. In a precedent-setting decision, the panel had ordered the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) last August to test the substances contained in the drugs the two sportspersons had claimed to have consumed, causing a ‘positive’ test for probenecid that comes under ‘masking agents’ in the WADA prohibited list. Nayak claimed he had only taken Xpel, a herbal diuretic, while Batheri claimed she had taken Mobijoint, another herbal medicine, as per a doctor’s advice for a knee injury. Both the medicines, tested at the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) returned ‘negative’ for probenecid. Nayak was asked on Tuesday to name any other drug he might have taken, but stuck to his original argument. Batheri was absent after having attended earlier hearings. — Special Correspondent
