Suspects escape police patrol after burglary
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Two suspects, who broke into a pawn shop in Saidapet here early on Monday, escaped on seeing a policeman on patrol duty. However, they managed to take away Rs. 25,000 from the cash box.
According to police sources, the constable Arivazhagan was patrolling the Dharmaraj Temple Street area in a motorcycle about 3.30 a.m. On seeing the movement of police, two youths ran to a motorcycle and sped away. Though the constable tried to chase them, the duo managed to escape.
He returned to the scene and found that the main door of the pawn shop was open. A jewel box was found outside. “There was no power in the locality. The burglars had broken the lock and entered the shop, under the cover of the darkness. They were probably trying to break open the jewel box when the police came there,” a police official said.
Enquiries with the shop owner revealed that Rs. 25,000 kept in the cash box was missing. Forensic experts collected evidence from the scene of crime.
