CHENNAI: The Department of Science and Technology is planning to provide interest free loans to women scientists, said R. Saha, Director, Patent Facilitation Centre, Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), Department of Science and Technology. Participating in a workshop on ‘Patent Drafting,’ organised by the Centre for Co-operation in Science and Technology among Developing Societies (CCSTDS), Dr. Saha said the Department was working out the modalities for the scheme. The loan would be provided to a group of women scientists. Present day entrepreneurs had the benefit of signing a limited liability partnership. Under this the liability of an individual is restricted only to the contributions made by them. Women scientists should utilise this facility, he said. Explaining the advantages of the course, Dr. Saha said after completing it the women could work from home itself. Setting up office was an expensive proposition, he pointed out. Sangeeta Nagar, Scientist, TIFAC, said the orientation programme prepared by the Council was more comprehensive than the courses conducted in some of the foreign countries. The government had also increased the scholarship amount for students joining the sixth batch of the course, she added. In her welcome address Ganga Radhakrishnan, Director, CCSTDS, said the programme was started five years ago. In the first three batches a total of 150 students were trained. In the fourth batch alone 100 students were trained, she added.
