YOU CAN IF YOU WILL: Resource person Anuradha Umashankar handling a Newspaper In Education (NIE) session at The Higher Secondary School for Boys at Srirangam in Tiruchi; — TIRUCHI: Some key attributes stand out in all successful persons, reflecting the inner truth of (the late First Lady of the United States) Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Making standard VII students of The Higher Secondary School for Boys, Srirangam, understand the ‘secret of success’ through a couple of activities was the purpose of the ‘The Hindu – Newspaper in Education’ session that constituted a module of the theme: Self-Confidence and Self-Discipline. Inscribing the words ‘I Can’ prominently on the blackboard at the very outset, resource person Anuradha Umashankar prompted the students to list the activities that they were capable of performing with confidence. They were then asked to analyse the reasons for the confidence. The uniform reasons cited were inclination to the particular tasks and constant practice. Ms. Umashankar explained that fear erupts only due to shortcomings which were rectifiable. The students were told that in a fiercely competitive environment, they had to necessarily get into the self-motivation mould for imbibing self-confidence. Then followed a short story to make them realise that an individual can usher in transformation in the society, only there is an attitudinal change from within, to begin with. The next activity was making them realise what self-discipline is all about. They were asked to list their daily activities and habits like the time they waking up, duration of watching television etc., and to rate themselves to determine any deviation from consistency in their behaviour when under watch by elders at home. At the end of this activity, the students were apprised of the significance of AWHIP (Acceptance, Willpower, hard work, industriousness, and persistence) as the pillars of self-discipline. They learnt how self-confidence brings in a desire to perform, which, in turn, leads to knowledge acquisition, competency and success. As the session came to an end, the significance of the prominent inscription on the blackboard and Roosevelt’s quote was well understood.
