Free sapling plan to cover schools

R. Rajaram

TIRUCHI: The Forest, Environment and Education Departments have joined hands to take the message of environment protection to school students through their combined initiative to expand green cover in government and aided schools in the district.

While funds would be provided by the Environment Department for implementing the initiative to plant saplings involving select non-governmental organisations, the Forest Department will provide saplings of various species free of cost to the identified schools.

The joint initiative of the three government departments was launched a couple of days ago at the Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School in Teppakulam where Collector T. Soundiah planted saplings in the presence of District Forest Officer D. Mani and Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan.

A total of 290 schools, in Tiruchi, Lalgudi and Musiri educational districts, have been identified under this initiative to protect the environment and the Forest Department would provide 10 saplings to each one of the selected institution.

Those schools with Eco Clubs and National Green Corps have been identified under this initiative for distribution of saplings which would be maintained by the respective institution.

The objective is to create awareness among school students of environment protection and to enhance tree cover outside forest areas, District Forest Officer Mani said.

The Forest Department would provide 2,900 saplings of neem and pungan to the identified schools.
