Ghalay pips Karmarkar

JALANDHAR: Sushil Ghalay of Army won the men’s 50-metre free rifle prone gold with a total of 700.5 in the 53rd National shooting championship at the PAP range here on Monday.

It was an impressive performance by Sushil Ghalay as he pipped Joydeep Karmarkar of Railways by 0.1 point, after both had made the final with a score of 596.

Pankaj Kumar shot the best in the final with a 104.7 but his qualification score of 593 pulled him down to the fourth place.

The seasoned Gagan Narang failed to make the final as he lost the tie-shoot by 0.1 point, when three shooters fought for the last two spots, after shooting 592.

Imran Hassan Khan (51.4) and Ram Kumar (51.3) pulled it off against Gagan (51.2) in the tie-shoot.

In women’s air pistol, Shweta Chaudhary was streets ahead of the rest of the pack as she won the gold with a total of 481.7.

Heena Sidhu jumped up from the eighth place to take the bronze thanks to a superb final (99.9) and a clincher of a last shot 10.1, that put her ahead of Sonia Rai by 0.7 points.

In the ‘champion of champions’ competition for the best eight pistol shooters from among men and women, Om Prakash of Army won the title, beating Amit Kumar of Border Security Force (BSF) in the climax. The field included Samaresh Jung, Heena Sidhu and Sonia Rai.

Bibaswan Ganguly 587. Women: 10m Air pistol: 1. Shweta Chaudhary 481.7 (385); 2. Annuraj Singh 475.5 (378); 3. Heena Sidhu 474.9 (375);

Team: 1. Maharashtra 1115, 2. Air India 1112; 3. Uttar Pradesh 1100.

Juniors: 1. Juhi Tanwar 379; 2. Ruchi Singh 376; 3. Heena Sidhu 375.
