Medicos to continue strike

HYDERABAD: The strike by junior doctors at all government teaching hospitals in the State will continue, as fresh round of talks between authorities and medicos on Sunday failed to yield any results. The junior doctors continued their demand of implementing basic pay structure while authorities insisted on a consolidated hike.

With no new promises forthcoming from the authorities, the junior doctors, after their Joint Action Committee meeting on Sunday evening, decided to continue their boycott of elective surgeries, outpatient services and even classes.

80 p.c. hike

Director of Medical Education Dr. T. Ravi Raju, who held talks with medicos at Gandhi Hospital, requested the junior doctors to call off the indefinite hunger strike. The DME in the meeting pointed out that the government had already assured the junior doctors of a hike of over 80 per cent in their stipend.

At present, a first year post-graduate gets a stipend of Rs. 8,000 and the government is offering to hike the stipend to Rs. 15,000. The junior doctors, however, point out that consolidated hike does not include annual increments and other allowances like HRA etc.

The medicos point out that the government should accept to pay stipend based on basic pay structure and not on consolidated basis.

“The committee, which was set up by government itself, on the stipend issue had recommended implementing basic pay structure.

They are not implementing the committee’s recommendations,” JUDA members asserted.
