Big at heart: Children and parents cheer winners of The Hindu Young World Painting competition 2009. (Right) Film actor Raja and noted painter Fawad Tamkanat pose with winners of the painting competition organised at Gitanjali Devashray in Hyderabad on Sunday.

HYDERABAD: On a Sunday morning, as lazy as any, M. Sai Kiran and his sister M. Sahitya woke up at 5 a.m. and dressed up quickly.

They had an early morning bus to catch and from Eddumailaram in Medak district, where they live, to Secunderabad - a good 70 kilometres away.

Packing their water colours and crayons in a bag, not to forget the paint brushes and pencils, tools indispensable to any artist, they headed to the city.

Good response

The children were among the 400 finalists who let their paint brushes do the talking as they unleashed their creativity on the white drawing sheets at The Hindu Young World Painting Competition 2009, held at Gitanjali Devashray School, Secunderabad, on Sunday.

Response to the event, in its nineteenth year, was overwhelming with the screening committee receiving over 2,500 entries from places as far away as Nanded in Maharashtra and Gulbarga and Bidar in Karnataka apart from Kurnool, Warangal, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda and the twin cities.

Topics

The on-the-spot painting competition had ‘A visit to industrial exhibition’ and a topical issue, ‘Election campaigning in your city’ as topics for the seniors category and ‘Independence Day celebrations at your school’ or ‘A scene at circus grounds’ for the juniors.

So while daredevils’ throttled motorbikes inside the rolling globes, lions leapt through ring of fire and acrobats swung on trapezes and clowns entertained the audience with their jugglery, patriotism also came alive. Politics was no less popular. Cadre of leading political parties canvassed for the contestants, while the flags of respective fluttered on the sheets of paper.

Their creations were being judged by noted artist Fawad Tamkanat and when the time for announcement of winners came, they were in for a surprise.

Film actor Raja who was the chief guest had the children shrieking in delight, no sooner than he emerged on the stage.

Winners

Srinivas Bhaskar of Johnson Grammar School, Habsiguda was declared the winner in the seniors’ category. R.R.K. Raj Kumar of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Air Force Station (AFS), Begumpet, and P. Amulya of Sri Chaitanya Techno School were the second and third winners in the same category.

Aastha Maskara, a seventh class student of P. Obul Reddy Public School, walked away the winner in juniors category while Puja Rao of Atomic Energy Central School – 2, ECIL, and Ch. Veer Chaitanya of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Air Force Station, Begumpet, were the second and third prize winners respectively.

Compliments

Puja Rao was in for a surprise when she drew special appreciation from Mr. Tamkanat, who gifted her with a portfolio signed by the painter himself.

“The moment I saw her painting, it reminded me of a work by Marc Chagall, who is my favourite artist,” Mr. Tamkanat said.

The Hindu should be complimented for conducting such a good event as it encourages children, providing them a competitive atmosphere to display their talents,” said M. Mogilaiah, a micro artist who brought his children to the painting competition.

National sponsors for the event were by Lotte Caramilk and Cheetos from Pepsi.

Regional sponsors were Jersey flavoured milk, Spencers bread and Jumani ice creams.
