TIRUNELVELI: Thanks to the continuing intermittent drizzle in the Western Ghats, water level in the Manimuthar dam, the largest reservoir in the district, crossed 100 feet on Sunday against its maximum capacity of 118 feet. The level at Papanasam dam, which stood at 118 feet on Saturday, reached 125 feet on Sunday while Servalar dam had 138.84 feet water. The sky remained overcast throughout the day and the intermittent drizzle continued. While a house at Karuppanthurai suffered extensive damage as a huge banyan tree fell on it, another one at Ambedkar Nagar in Vannarpet collapsed due to the incessant drizzle. No one was injured in both the incidents. Shutters of Nangunerian channel were opened to avoid a possible breach. Rainfall in the district (in mm): Papanasam dam 98, Gadana dam 93, Servalar dam 82, Manimuthar dam 89, Radhapuram 60, Palayamkottai 57, Nambiyar dam 55, Tirunelveli 52, Ambasamudram 50, Nanguneri 49, Alangulam and Kodumudiyar dam 45 each, Adavinainar dam 35, Aayikudi 34.80, Tenkasi 33.20, Karuppanadhi dam 33, Sivagiri 25.20, Ramanadhi dam 20, Gundar dam 17, Shencottai 15.30 and Sankarankovil 13 mm. TuticorinHeavy rain lashed several parts of the district and normal life was thrown out of gear. Low-lying areas were inundated following the continuous downpour. Many roads became slushy causing difficulties to the pedestrians and the vehicular traffic was badly affected. The day was unusually chill as the sky remained overscast throughout the day. The maximum rainfall of 155 mm was recorded in Tiruchendur while Srivaikuntam recorded 112 mm. KanyakumariHeavy rain lashed various parts of Kanyakumari district, particularly the catchment areas, on Sunday. According to the officials of Public Work Department, almost all rivers in the district were overflowing with rainwater. The water level in 1,500 tanks was going up. Two persons died owing to heavy rain. Nallathampi of Seramangalam near Kuzuthurai died when a wall collapsed near the workshop when the victim was proceeding towards his house after repairing his moped in the same area. Similarly, a casual worker, John of Kazuvanthittai near Kuzhithurai, was electrocuted when he came into contact with the stay wire of an electric post in the same village. Low-lying areas, including houses constructed for the tsunami-affected fishermen in Kanyakumari and Kovalam, were inundated.
