Annual ritual: The fourth Karthika Masa Mahaabhisheka being performed to Nandi idol on Chamundi Hills on Sunday. Mysore: Devotees and tourists witnessed the mahaabhisheka of Nandi, a monolithic idol of the sacred bull, atop Chamundi hills here on Sunday. It was a spectacle to watch the 16 ft high and 25 ft wide granite idol. The mahaabhisheka was performed 30 different items including milk, curds, honey, ghee, banana, tender coconut and water. The mahaabhisheka to the 342-year-old idol of Nandi was performed jointly by Nandi Pooja Mahotsava Samiti, Bettada Balaga and residents of nearby villages. The ceremony began on Sunday morning in the presence of Suttur math seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji. The mahaabhisheka to Nandi atop Chamundi hill was first performed in 2006 as part of the Karthika Masa celebrations and the fourth annual mahaabhisheka was performed on Sunday with the accompaniment of the chanting of hymns. Although there are no records, it is said that the mahaabhisheka was performed about 150 years ago by the then rulers of Mysore. Chief priest Subbanna performed the mahaabhisheka.
