Vaibhav, Girish in lead

NEW DELHI: The promising trio of Vidit Gujarathi, S.P. Sethuraman and Aditya Udeshi continued to bring cheers to the Indian camp by winning their third successive round in the under-16 section of the World Youth chess championship at Antalya, Turkey, on Sunday.

On a day when most Indian overnight leaders failed to maintain their winning sequence, top seed Vaibhav Suri and third seed Girish Koushik won to be among the leaders in the under-12 section.

Tejas Ravichandran (under-15) and Aryan Chopra (under-8) were the other Indians who completed a hat-trick of victories in the championship.

Among the girls, the duo of M.K. Mahalakshmi and Goli Lasya won to stay on course for a medal in the under-12 section. Similarly, Pratushya Bodda kept alive hopes in the under-14 category.

Second seed Padmini Rout (girls’ under-16) was a surprise loser while Indian spearhead B. Adhiban drew with a lower-rated rival in the under-18 section.
