KOCHI: The Kerala Electricity Workers’ Federation (AITUC) will organise rallies across the State in protest against the move to convert the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) into a company. AITUC State secretary Kanam Rajendran will inaugurate the rally at Kasaragod on November 16, CPI secretariat member E. Chandrasekaran will inaugurate the rally at Wayanad and federation general secretary M. Sukumara Pillai will inaugurate the rally in Idukki. The rallies will conclude at Vyduthi Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram on November 24 and a protest march to the Secretariat will be held on November 25. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, A.N. Rajan, president of the federation, said the draft transfer scheme stated that the company would not seek any financial support from the State government. This would mean that the consumers would have to bear the burden of the increase in electricity charges. At present, the rates were kept low through government support and subsidies, he said. He pointed out that the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity had observed in the case between the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission and Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. that generation, transmission and distribution of power could be handled by a single entity and this justified the State government’s decision to start just one company in place of the KSEB.
