An ideal platform for children to express themselves

Encouraging response to The Hindu Young World Painting Competition 2009

Good show: The prize winners showing their works of art in Mysore on Sunday.

MYSORE: The Hindu Young World Painting Competition 2009 turned out to be an ideal platform for children to bring out their creative best. During the two-hour long competition held at the Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education (RIMSE) here on Sunday, the children depicted their ideas on topics given to them, in brilliant art form, drawing widespread appreciation.

The participants were selected after a preliminary screening and were divided into two categories – Junior (classes fourth to seventh) and Senior (classes eighth to 10th).

The topic for the juniors was ‘My School’ and for the seniors it was ‘City Traffic’.

Over 270 children representing schools from Mysore, Nanjangud, Hassan, Mandya and Chamarajnagar participated in the event, which was sponsored by Lotte Caramilk. The response to the event has been growing and the turnout this year was high.

Basavaraj Musavalgi, Head, Department of Graphics, and N.S. Pradeep Kumar, faculty in graphics, at the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA) who were the judges, had a tough time choosing the winners in both categories. They went through each and every painting with keen interest to identify their pluses and then decide upon the winners.

While congratulating the children for coming out with their best, Swami Jitakamanandaji, correspondent, RIMSE, Mysore, who was the chief guest at the prize distribution function, called upon parents to encourage their children to express their ideas and thoughts in the form of art.

“Don’t see that as a waste of time. Instead, encourage their talents and recognise their creative skills as it will help them achieve something remarkable in their lives,” he said. The swami congratulated The Hindu for encouraging and identifying young talent by organising the competition.

The swami and Mr. Basavaraj later distributed prizes to the winners.

Students of RIMSE supported the organisers in conducting the event.

In the junior category, M.V. Smitha of class 6 at the Vidya Vardhaka Sangha’s B.M. Sri School, Kuvempunagar, Mysore, won the first prize, while B.N. Chandana of class 7 at Vishwamanava School, Mysore, won the second prize. The third prize was taken by Aishwarya S. Raj of class 7 at M.P.V. School, Mysore.
