CELEBRATION TIME: Bravery award winners Sangamesh S. Athanur and Sachin Thambad at the Children’s Day programme at Bal Bhavan in Bangalore on Saturday.

Bangalore: The launch of a software to track girls enrolled under the Bhagyalakshmi Scheme and of the official website of Bal Bhavan marked the Children’s Day celebrations, organised by the Department of Women and Child Development.

The specialised software tracks girls enrolled under the insurance scheme till they turn 18, with an aim to ensure that they complete at least eight years of education and do not get married early. Of the 7 lakh beneficiaries of the insurance scheme, the data on 2.5 lakh has already been entered.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor H.R. Bhardwaj said that Jawaharlal Nehru, whose birthday is celebrated as Children’s Day, had great faith in the younger generation and their ability to make India a vibrant democracy. Women and Child Development Minister P.M. Narendraswamy and Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri underlined the need for providing children greater access to education and healthcare.

The colourful celebrations at Bal Bhavan on Saturday included felicitations to children who had won various awards for bravery, excellence in cultural activities and academics. Children dressed in colourful folk costumes added zest to the celebrations.

At Lalbagh

A sea of children, mostly from the city’s government schools and orphanages, swarmed the otherwise calm landscape of Lalbagh. Magic, song and dance shows, free popcorn and game stalls and celebrities marked the daylong carnival.

While H.N. Ananth Kumar, Bangalore South MP, and Home Minister V.S. Acharya represented the Government, actor Upendra and popular singer Gurukiran stole the show.

Organisers had a tough time keeping the children away from their idols who interacted freely with them. Both political leaders, who stayed for the entire two-hour event, had interactive sessions with the students.

After their high-profile guests left, magic shows and dance shows kept the children entertained. The free tattoo, mehendi and balloon modelling stalls were sponsored by employees from Citrix. Speaking to The Hindu, Guna Thantry from Citrix said that the employees had decided to contribute generously to the programme so that it could be held on a large scale.

At Raj Bhavan

At the Raj Bhavan, 50 children with disabilities spent the morning with Mr. Bhardwaj on the sprawling grounds.

The Governor unveiled a canvas portrait of Jawaharlal Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi and dedicated them to the children of the State.
