Palakkad in semifinals

MUVATTUPUZHA: Palakkad edged out Ernakulam 5-4, via the tie-breaker, and entered the semifinals of the 36th Kerala State junior football championship at the Nirmala College ground here on Saturday.

The teams were level 1-1 at the end of the regulation period.

Thiruvananthapuram also made the last-four grade, defeating Kasargod 2-1. Thrissur joined the fray with Bharathan’s 15th minute strike giving it a 1-0 victory over Pathanamthitta.

Meanwhile, Idukki and Malappuram were locked 1-1 when rain stopped their quarterfinal with about 25 minutes to go. The rest of the match will be played on Sunday.

The results (quarterfinals):

Thrissur 1 (Bharathan 15th) bt Pathanamthitta 0.

Palakkad bt Ernakulam 5-4, via tie-breaker.

Thiruvananthapuram 2 (Francis 57th, Rajesh 81st) bt Kasargod 1 (E. James 51st).

Pre-quarterfinals: Pathanamthitta 3 (Ajith Rajendran 1st, Vishnu Nair 42nd, Ahmed Hamras 46th) bt Kozhikode 0.

Malappuram 4 (M. Asif 54th, 67th & 77th, K.S. Harseed 74th) bt Wynad 0. — Principal Correspondent
