Outing: The Mysore zoo was teeming with children on Saturday as the authorities had announced free entry for them on the occasion of Children’s Day.

MYSORE: It was Children’s Day on Saturday and the children enjoyed it the most.

On the occasion, the authorities of the Mysore zoo, Karanji Lake Nature Park and Dasara Exhibition had announced free entry to children to the three venues.

Apart from children of various schools in the city, those from neighbouring villages and towns had also turned up in large numbers at the zoo and the exhibition ground.

Though the zoo authorities had offered free entry from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., children, mostly clad in their school uniforms, were seen entering the zoo even after the stipulated hours. The children were being repeatedly told through the public address system not to feed the animals or taunt them by throwing stones and other items at them. Teachers and other representatives of schools were trying to educate the children about the importance of the zoo and the role it played in learning about nature and wildlife.

Traffic on the road leading to the Mysore Race Course was affected as a large number of schoolchildren were waiting outside the zoo premises to get in.

Sources in Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens said that over 10,000 children visited the zoo on Saturday. “The turnout was less compared to last year,” they added.

Children also thronged the Karanji Lake Nature Park, one the prominent lung spaces in the city housing a butterfly park and walk through aviary.

The authorities at the Dasara Exhibition Ground offered free breakfast to the visiting children. After the breakfast, the children toured the expo ground and played various amusement games at half price.
