Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Eight fishermen from Kanyakumari district are missing as seven boats sank in the wake of Cyclone Phyan off the coast of Goa.

On November 1, about 150 fishing boats from Kanyakumari left Azhikkal and Kochi, headed for the Arabian Sea between Kerala and Gujarat, according to a Fisheries Department release. On November 10, the fleet was hit by the cyclone off the Goan coast.

The Coast Guard took steps to rescue the boats. Three injured fishermen were rescued by Goan fishermen and taken to hospital in Goa. They have now been sent home. Three boats were rescued and brought to shore in Kochi and Karwar.

The Commissioner of Fisheries is in close contact with his counterparts in Goa and Karnataka and the Tamil Nadu government is taking steps on a war footing to rescue the fishermen and boats, stated the release.
