650 schoolchildren vying for titles at chess tournament

MYSORE: Grandmasters in the making have arrived in Mysore to vie for various titles at the State-level chess tournament which began here at the Teresian College auditorium on Friday.

As many as 650 children from primary and high schools from across the State are participating in the tournament which was inaugurated by young Grandmaster Tej Kumar. The three-day tournament is being conducted in two categories — Under-14 and Under-17. The tournament is being conducted under the joint auspices of the Mysore Zilla Panchayat and the Physical Education division of the Department of Public Instruction. District Physical Education Officer T. Mariappa said 20 children, accompanied by four team managers from each district, were participating.
