MELBOURNE: Tiger Woods battled swirling breezes and some wayward driving to card a patient four-under-par 68 and take a three-stroke lead after the second round of the $1.4 million Australian Masters on Friday. Woods, co-leader overnight, made two of his four birdies in his first two holes to take the outright lead, then held firm with six successive pars to finish with a 10-under total of 134 in bright sunshine at Kingston Heath Golf Club.
Australia’s Adam Scott (142) was eight shots behind Woods at the halfway mark, while former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy battled to hit greens in regulation and is a further three back (145). Stuart Appleby, coming off an indifferent season on the U.S. PGA Tour, is five behind Woods after posting a two-under 70. Chowrasia slipsIn Hong Kong, at tied 12th, S.S.P. Chowrasia (69) remained the highest-placed Indian but it was Jeev Milkha Singh who brought home the best card among his compatriots — a three-under 67 — in the second round of the Hong Kong Open golf tournament here on Friday. Chowrasia was six-under 134 overall after picking up two birdies against a lone bogey at the Hong Kong Golf course. Jeev, meanwhile, returned five birdies against a couple of bogeys to leapfrog 40 places to tied 54th with a total of two-under 138. Jyoti Randhawa was a stroke adrift of Chowrasia after he too turned in a 69 to go down six places to tied 22nd. At the top, there was a four-way tie for the lead with French Gregory Bourdy (67), Dutch Robert-Jan Derksen (68), Chinese Liang Wen-chong (65) and South African Charl Schwartzel (66) totalling nine-under after two rounds. — Agencies
