All set: A view of Salem Airport. SALEM: The inordinate delay by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to clear the Salem Airport for flight operations has put the operators, Kingfisher Airlines and the officials of Airport Authority of India (AAI), in a fix. As the airlines have already finalised its schedule to operate its ATR craft in the Chennai-Salem-Chennai sector from November 15, the much important security clearance from the Bureau is now anxiously awaited. The airlines, however, anticipating clearance at any moment also carried out a dry run on Thursday, which according to its officials was “very smooth.” A team of ground staff from the airlines have been transferred and deputed to man the operations from November 15. “We will get the clearance in time (for operations) since we are undertaking all possible efforts to get the same from the Bureau,” said an official with an optimistic note. City’s elite and trade and commerce bodies including Salem District Tiny and Small Industries Association and Salem-Dharmapuri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, have chipped into take up the matter with important officials in the Civil Aviation Ministry at New Delhi to get the security clearance. Meanwhile a posse of policemen, including Armed Reserve constables has undertaken the security of the airport since Thursday evening. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), which has been enforcing its routine 2 pm to 4 pm load shedding in and around the Airport area for quite some time now, has also decided to withdraw it. A senior official told The Hindu that he had directed his subordinates to withdraw the load shedding for the airport, remaining non-operational till today. The airport has placed orders for 125 kv generator, which is expected to be sanctioned at any time now. At present it has a 70 kv generator. “Otherwise the airport, which has not seen commercial operations for the last 15 years after NEPC withdrew, is fully equipped to handle domestic flights,” says an official. Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam is expected to receive the inaugural flight at Salem Airport on Nov. 15.
