Academia and industry to benefit from pact

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore, has signed a cooperation agreement with Co-way International Technology Transfer Centre, supported and promoted by Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, and Skyquest Technology Consulting.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Shanghai on November 6 with the main objective of promoting technology transfer between the academia and the industry at the international level.

The agreement was signed by G.L. Shekar, vice-principal of the NIE, Liu Zhengping, general manager of Co-way centre, and Akash M. Bhavsar, president of Skyquest Technology Consulting.

A press release said this was an outcome of the “International training workshop on technology transfer” held between October 25 and November 7 in Shanghai.

The workshop was sponsored by the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science and Technology of Peoples Republic of China.

Mr. Bhavsar said the agreement provided ample scope for setting up a Technology Transfer and Business Development Unit at the NIE. If such units were established at academic institutions, they would not only create technology transfer opportunities but also foster innovation and entrepreneurship so that knowledge was transformed to economic value, he added.

The pact covers issues related to enhancement of NIE’s R&D potential, intervention at existing technology platforms and creation of novel technology tools and products.
