KARUR: The certification standards with regard to quality management, environmental management and occupational health and safety management systems have been experiencing a rapid evolution that it is imperative for the exporters, especially the home textile exporters, to keep pace with them, speakers pointed out at a workshop here on Thursday. Speaking at a workshop on “Recent Changes in ISO 9001:2008 and SA 8000:2008” conducted for home textile exporters, Senior Lead Auditor with French certification firm Bureau Veritas Certification India Limited, said that the International Organisation for Standardisation (IOS) was responsible for review of ISO 9000 standards. ISO 9001:2008 was the fourth revision since its inception in 1987. Organisations at present certified for ISO 9001:2000 needed to renew their certifications before November 15, 2010. Quality ensuredSome changes were incorporated in the revised standard to ensure quality and continued improvement. For example the certified organisations had to define the type and extent of control over their supplier to ensure the quality of product or service they receive from the suppliers. Similarly, the competence of employees deployed directly as well as indirectly and whose work affects the product quality such as contract employees also needed to be verified before the work was assigned to them, he said. Lead Auditor M. Saravanan speaking on the changes on SA 8000 informed that Social Accountability International (SAI) was responsible for the review of SA 8000 standards periodically. SAI has come out with the revised version of SA 8000:2008 which was third revision since 1997. The present SA 8000:2001 was expiring on December 31 this year. In the revised version of SA 8000:2008, the focus was on workers’ health and safety and their participation in employee welfare-related activities along with the management. President of Karur Textile Manufacturer Exporters’ Association M. Natchimuthu welcomed the gathering while Regional Manager of Bureau Veritas Certification India Limited, Tiruchi, B. Nagaraj, proposed a vote of thanks. Chief executives, senior managers in quality and human resources management sectors and home textile export unit officials participated in the workshop.
