RAISING DEMANDS: Members of the Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association staging a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Director of Collegiate Education in Kozhikode on Thursday.

KOZHIKODE: E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MP, said here on Thursday that the delay in the implementation of the revised University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scales for college teachers in the State was a perfect example of the Left Democratic Front government’s neglect of the higher education sector.

Mr. Basheer, a former Education Minister, was inaugurating a march to the office of the Deputy Director of Collegiate Education here organised by the Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association in support of its demands, including the implementation of the revised pay scales.

He demanded to know why the State government was not ready to implement these when the Centre was ready to shoulder 80 per cent of the additional expense incurred on that count initially.

He said the government was adopting an approach that led to the loss of all Central funds. Though there were six Union Ministers from Kerala, the State government was not ready to use that advantage.

He assured the college teachers of full support from the United Democratic Front for their agitations.

K.A. Siraj, regional general secretary of the association, presided.

Among the teachers’ demands are inclusion of Arabic teachers in the UGC scheme, equal salary conditions for university and college teachers and increasing the pay of homoeopathy and Ayurveda medical college teachers.
